DC’s 1st black headlining superhero was going to be Black Bomber, a white racist who turned into a black superhero when under stress. When asked to work on the project, writer Tony Isabella said to the editors ‘Do you REALLY want DC’s first black superhero to be a white bigot?’ He convinced them to drop it, created a new character called Black Lightning, and that creation continued to be the work he was most proud of.
