The slinky was invented by accident. In 1943, an engineer knocked over a length of spring that proceeded to ‘walk’ off his desk, ‘step’ onto a pile of books, land on the floor, re-coil itself, and then stand upright, which suddenly gave him a great idea for a toy. Source Source 2
